The Martyrdom of the Saints
In ancient times (but not only) torture and capital punishment have always been instruments of the dominant political power. This exhibition consists of original-size reproductions of instruments used by the Romans against the first Christian communities.
This exhibition focuses on 18 Saints of Roman times (from the death of Christ till the Constantine Edit in 313 a.C.) who suffered martyrdom by instrument of torture.
The instrument used for their martyrdom is displayed next to each painting. For Saint Cathrine of Alexandria, for instance, there is a reproduction of a spiked wheel, about 160 cm large, and for Saint Gennaro, there is a beheading block and axe.
